In Harry Potter, why did James Potter and Sirius Black bully Severus Snape?

Because James Potter was such a JERK. He wasn't just mean to Snape, he was CRUEL. There was absolutely no excuse for the way they treated him. No wonder Snape grew up with issues. James makes Draco Malfoy look nice.
