Best ways to remember what I finished reading from my textbooks?

I'm taking United States History and Film History right now, 2 cles= 6 units total, and summer intersession is 6 weeks long. Would you recommend annotating the textbooks while reading both of those books? The US History textbook is a little more complicated than the Film History textbook, the Film HIstory textbook is a fairly short and easy read. Still, I want to remember what I read, or else in about 2 weeks when midterms comes for those cles, I will be in trouble. Good news is both cl is open note exams, with my US History cl professor allowing students to use a LAPTOP, anything! Cool professor LOL. But how do I stay on top of things? Please answer based on experience, THANKS :)
