How did Ptolemies justify their non-hereditary kinship to Macedonians and Greeks?

Ptolemy was one of Alexander the Great's generals. Ptolemy was appointed to govern Egypt and then declared himself king. In this sense, he was an heir to Alexander's conquest and rule of Egypt. Alexander was so great a conqueror and even deified, that they continued their connection to him, as if gave their dynasty more status.
